Chocolate Spa Benefits your Skin

Chocolate Spa Benefits!? Who knew that Chocolate was actually good for your skin? I mean really good. We all know that eating chocolate is delicious - that's a given. But our secret delicious yummy indulgence is associated with getting fat and adding huge amounts of calories. Blah Blah Blah. Yes, we all know that. For a change let's uncover some good news about chocolate and why you should cover yourself in the lovely stuff

Note: We use "Chocolate" loosely in this article but what we really mean is the "Good Chocolate" or more correctly, "unprocessed cocoa". Granted, we are going over to the "dark side" of chocolate - dark, no sugar added, bitter. But that's the truth of chocolate. And that's where the goodness lies.

The Benefits of Chocolate for your skin

Chocolate is full of Antioxidants

The cocoa bean, especially the raw bean, has been rated the highest in terms of the ORAC score. ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) is a laboratory score measuring the antioxidant activity of foods. "What is an antioxidant?" you may ask. Well very simply, it's a "good guy" that fights free radicals. A superhero fighting the war against the damage that free radicals can cause to our bodies. Essentially a by-product of our body's normal metabolism, free radicals are formed when oxygen interacts with certain molecules. These become the "bad guys" that can quickly destroy cell membranes, DNA and other cellular function essential to health and life. These can lead to deformed cells and are strongly linked to cancers and other serious diseases.

Free radicals are atoms or groups of atoms with an odd (unpaired) number of electrons and can be formed when oxygen interacts with certain molecules. Once formed these highly reactive radicals can start a chain reaction, like dominoes. Their chief danger comes from the damage they can do when they react with important cellular components such as DNA, or the cell membrane. Cells may function poorly or die if this occurs. To prevent free radical damage the body has a defense system of antioxidants.1

So then, the cocoa in chocolate, especially dark chocolate, contains a good dollop of antioxidants. More antioxidants than red wine or green tea in fact.

Dark chocolate is loaded with organic compounds that are biologically active and function as antioxidants. These include polyphenols, flavanols and catechins, among others. One study showed that cocoa and dark chocolate had more antioxidant activity, polyphenols and flavanols than any other fruits tested, which included blueberries and acai berries2

Good to know.

Chocolate Hydrates the skin

Whhhat? I know! I was always under the impression that chocolate can dull your skin. But my research has uncovered some new information that says the opposite is true. For eating, the darker the chocolate, or the purer the cocoa, the better for your skin. The downside is that the the dark 70% bars available are bitter compared to the sweeter sugar-rich milk chocolates. Bummer. But as a mask, or skin treatment, bitter rich dark cocoa can actually improve hydration and increase blood flow to the skin. Besides, your skin doesn't have taste-buds.

A study in the Journal of Nutrition gave women high or low flavanol powder dissolved in water and discovered that flavonoids in dark chocolate absorb UV light, help protect and increase blood flow to the skin and improve skin's hydration and complexion3

Chocolate Firms the Skin

Yes, chocoholics can rejoice in this new tidbit. Firmer skin. How? Well it's got to do with the magnesium content in the cocoa bean. Magnesium is easily absorbed through the skin and of course, the high quality cocoa powder we use use in our spa treatment is very high in the mineral. Again, if you're expecting the same benefits while reaching for a milk-chocolate bar, you'd be wrong. Highly processed chocolate has very little of the good bits left... plus added sugar. And we all know where that goes.

Antioxidants also help increase the level of collagen and elastin in the skin and thereby reduce the effects of aging. Fine lines and wrinkles can be treated with regular chocolate treatments as antioxidants lessen the damage caused by free radicals in the body.4

Another benefit your skin will get with a good quality Chocolate Spa Body Treatment is increased collagen and fat-burning activity:

Chocolate contains theobromine that helps burn fat and get rid of cellulite. A chocolate massage or chocolate body wrap helps work the chocolate-based lotion or oil into the skin for the best results.5

The reason for the fat-burning effect has to do with the caffeine content in chocolate. Caffeine is well-known for stimulating blood flow which has a knock-on effect - increased blood flow means your cells are invigorated, and invigorated cells are healthier resulting in decreased aging and plumper firmer skin.

Chocolate Boosts your Mood

Chocolate is a powerful mood enhancer. I know. But that's why eating chocolate is so addictive - that feeling of euphoria is actually real. Even the smell of chocolate can increase brain function. Is there anything chocolate can't do? It truly is amazing.

Boosts your mood and cognitive performance. Epicatechin, the main flavonoid in cacao, improves various aspects of cognition, preserve cognitive abilities during aging, and even puts you in a better mood 6

Having a Chocolate Body Experience at the spa will most definitely have an effect on your mood without the guilt associated with smashing into a bar of your favourite guilty pleasure! The minute you walk in to the treatment room, your senses will be overwhelmed with cozy delightful chocolate.
